On the occasion of Mustafa Ismail's demise
Before the Revolution, I was barred from travelling; that is to say, I could not travel outside the country. For a long time, I had been in prison; and when I was released, I was not allowed to leave the country. I had plans at the time, among them was— about which I also had told my family— to visit Quran reciters of Egypt, especially Sheikh Mustafa Ismail. If ever I could leave the country.
Sheikh Mustafa Ismail was indeed awesome. There were qualities about his recitation that – to speak fairly— are highly imitable. Apart from his voice and his manner of pronunciation of letters and words, he would give life to Quranic words; that is, when he recited a verse, the audience would be imbued with a feeling the verse was purported to impart.

به مناسبت سالروز درگذشت مصطفی اسماعیل
قبل از انقلاب، من ممنوع‌السفر بودم؛ یعنى نمى‌توانستم به خارج از کشور سفر کنم. مدتها در زندان بودم؛ وقتى هم که از زندان بیرون آمدم، در داخل کشور محصور بودم. در آن وقت، یکى از آرزوها و تصمیمهایم این بود - به خانواده‌ى خودم هم گفته بودم - که اگر بتوانم از کشور خارج بشوم، براى دیدن قرّاء - مخصوصاً شیخ مصطفى اسماعیل - به مصر مى‌روم.
شیخ مصطفى اسماعیل، خیلى فوق‌العاده بود. چیزهایى در تلاوت او بود که انصافاً قابل تقلید است. منهاى مسأله‌ى صدا و کیفیت اداى حروف و کلمات، او کلمات قرآنى را جان مى‌داد. یعنى وقتى که او آیه را مى‌خواند، آن احساسى به مستمع دست مى‌داد که در آیه، اقتضاى آن احساس بود.
